Gretna Green, Scotland, August 1815
Shaw Gordon has been written off as an unspeakable rogue by his entire clan. Shaw's new wife Margot and her father have frittered away most of the estate Shaw is heir to, spending the cash on luxuries, pawning everything of value, and casting the tenants off the land to sell it. But Shaw's cousin Drew, clan chief of the Gordons, is still very much alive. He returns from Waterloo to discover what his heir Shaw has seemingly done. Shaw is disowned, and Margot suffers a shocking fate.
Shaw becomes the black sheep of the family, forced to live by his wits ever more desperately in order to keep food on the table and a roof over his wife's head.
One fateful night in January 1818, Shaw's actions help lead to the most deadly consequences. In the midst of the chaos, he rescues Catriona MacKenzie, who's fled from an arranged marriage in the Highlands, but is struggling to make her way in southern Scotland as a lovely young woman on her own.
Shaw tries to atone for what he's done by offering Catriona shelter and a job until she decides what she wants to do next. Despite all the rational reasons why they can never be together, the attraction grows between them, threatening to spill over into the most incredible passion.
But each are hiding secrets that threaten to destroy any chance of their having a future together. Does Shaw dare admit his growing feelings for Cat? Or tell the truth about what he is, and what he's done?
When Cat's family suddenly arrives to take her back north, will she obey her father meekly? Or will she fight for the man who's come to mean everything to her…?
